Latest FCA club news from Randy Burns:

Summerville HS had their 3^rd huddle meeting Tues, close to 40 attended. They are thinking they may need to find another room to meet. AR had sign up for clubs, 145 students signed up for FCA. Berkeley HS had their first meeting today, had 27 students and 5 coaches. I am still buying Bibles and getting them into the hands of students. Cane Bay has received 3 dozen, and given them out. Berkeley is requested Bibles also. I will be ordering more. Alston MS is about to get a huddle going. Fort Dorchester is now meeting on a regular basis with some football players, pray that seeds will be planted there.

Next Weds is See You at the Pole, a nation wide event. A number of our local youth pastors hosted a SYATP rally last night. It was great. They allowed me to put in a plug for FCA.

Family Movie Night - Truth be Told

Last year we partnered with Moms 4 Family TV, a bunch of regular moms working to make televesion relevant. Instead of complaining about the lack of good family programs they created the Family Movie Night iniative.
In just one year, Family Movie Night has reached millions of viewers all across America. The most recent movie, Change of Plans, was a significant success on Saturday, January 8th. Over three million households watched the movie and many lives were touched by the messages of compassion and self-sacrifice.

Why Youth Worker Networking Sucks

The following started as a letter to NNYM Dallas and Collin County network leaders but quickly became a diatribe on the state of YW networking as we know it, why it sucks and how we MUST work to make things better. This is a letter to ALL youth workers.

I used to think network groups were solid; set 'em up and let 'em go. After 18 months of formally working with the National Network of Youth Ministries as the Metro Dallas Coordinator, overseeing Dallas and Collin Counties, I can truly say: I couldn’t have been more wrong. Youth worker networking groups are liquid, and I’m trying to find ways to embrace that and find traction for our groups, both for today and tomorrow.

Why are our networking groups so fragile? I believe it has to do with the nature of “Professional Youth Ministry” and a misunderstanding of youth worker networking.

High Turnover Rate among YWs

No surprise here: every survey points to the fact that youth workers don’t stay in current positions very long. I’ve tracked 40% turnover among our group, among non-leader participants (those in leadership positions stay longer; I’ve got some theories to explore later). That means that a successfully launched group with 20 members that is vibrant and healthy will, in two years, turn into a four top at the IHOP.

Misunderstanding about the Purpose of Youth Worker Networking

For a while I wanted to stop using the term “networking’ because it is nebulous and meant different things to as many people as had an opinion. But then I sent a tweet, checked my Facebook, and realized that people see the value in “social” networking, although they probably didn’t agree on what it means - but they realized it was valuable. I guess even though there may be widespread (dis)agreement on what general networking is, each person uses if for their own ends. Nice! So, what is the purpose of youth worker networking or networking groups?

No Value Placed on Youth Worker Networking

Some see “off the grid” networking as NOTworking. Too bad, they fall so short. Others see it as a place to promote their cool youth group event. You know, the “Hey, come to my event and bring your students because I want big numbers and really don’t care about anything else and my event will probably still suck because this is how I’m promoting it” guy. That's way off and getting colder. Still others see it youth worker networking as a monthly lunch meeting – getting warmer, barely. But here is a concept: RELATIONSHIP IS THE RESOURCE! Read that last sentence out loud, memorize it and let is set you free. Your are the resource! The person across the table from you is the resource! Everyone has something to give and something to get.

We Need to Think Forward

Thinking about youth work into the next decade, two things stand out bigger than ever. And we need to deal with them if formal youth work is to survive. If we fail to deal with these two issues, the youth worker of today, as we know it, will become extinct.

We need to redefine who the youth worker is. Here is a hint: it's not ONLY the guy who wears skinny jeans, goes to all the local high school games and has an office at the church that says “Youth Pastor”. There is a place in our next decade paradigm for this “Youth Pastor Guy” but he is not the only horse in the race. Everyone who works with teenagers is a youth worker: the high school coach, the ballet teacher, the Jr. Optimist leader, the scout troop sergeant, the guitar teacher and the parent. Everyone who works with teenagers is a youth worker, and we need to think about how we can offer our services to recruit and train them

We need to define or assign value to relational networking. I’m blown away about how youth workers overlook and dismiss this. Last year, According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 70 percent of all jobs are found through networking. In 2009 1 in 6 people who married met their mate through social networking/online dating. Ludite, silo youth work is going the way of the dinosaur. We need to not only find value but find ways to add more value and promote the value of the youth worker network group.

So where do we go from here?

Think! We have to change our thinking about who a youth worker is, find ways to connect with the new breed, and find ways to mesh the new and old breeds.
Database! We lose track of 40% of our people each year. Sometimes we lose entire churches from moving or relocating or extinction. Other times churches spring up and we don’t know about it. Someone needs to: 1. locate churches; 2. find out who the youth contact is; and 3. give the info to a local network leader who can and will do something about it. Churches are only one avenue of the new breed of youth worker. How can we identify and find new databases of the new breed?
Monetization! There is influence in youth worker networking but not necessarily finances. We need to find creative ways of funding the groups, along with the people who are building and sustaining the groups. Those creating the groups and their value are often the ones without a full time salary backing them, and the important task of building networks is left to those who can raise their own funds. There has to be a way to turn influence into capital in a ministry setting.
PR! What is the only reason to start a youth worker networking group? To change the world by starting a movement to reach more students for Christ. Every movement needs a propaganda machine. We need consistent, regular, quality info and PR. Good communication and PR can bring effective talk points, assign value and grow the movement.
Unity! We need to esteem each other, make time for each other and do life together.

I know there are more things needed and I guess this is the point where we harvest the power of the collective. Please share your thoughts.

Teaching Youth How to Handle Their Money

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know ahead of time. This is not a Riverbluff event, but a local event open to anyone.

On Saturday March 19th, a local non-profit organization will be using our facility to teach 13-18 year olds financial skills. From budgeting to debit/credit cards, to you name it financially. They will be having Rush of Fools and Downhere in concert here that night.

I'm letting you know before it breaks on media outlets.... it will be promoted to local schools, on radio, etc....

We're hosting it and have to put out NO MONEY.

For those kids who come to at least 3 sessions that afternoon, everything is completely FREE. I think it includes dinner too. This is no joke!

I thought you may be interested.

This note is about an upcoming Gathering event. “The Gathering” is a youth minister’s fellowship in the GC/Moncks Corner area that brings their youth groups together 2-3 times per year.

This Nov. 14 we are having a “day retreat”. This was created in order to save the expense in going away for the weekend, but also with the desire to encourage our students and give them a spiritual boost.

We’ll meet on Sat. Nov. 14, from 9-3pm and have a day of spiritual encouragement for Jr/Sr students. We’ll begin/end with worship and have opportunities for students to choose various seminars that they might be interested in. Some seminars topics suggested have been:

Creation vs. Evolution

Preparing a Student Worship Band

Developing Spiritual Habits (Bible/Prayer)

Christianity 101

Witnessing/Apologetics

Deciphering Culture

There will also be opportunities to interact with others as well as enjoy several giveaways from area businesses. We are charging $10 per person to cover t-shirts and lunch. If you would like to participate and/or get in on the planning for this event, we meet for lunch every Tuesday at noon at Los Arcos in Goose Creek.

Attached you will find a promotion poster to use. If you are interested please let me know ASAP. We are asking for final numbers by Oct 25 in order to pre-plan for shirts and food.

Hope for the hopeless...

On Saturday, Oct 10th, the Greater Charleston Convoy of Hopewill be rolling into town.

The 7^th annual Convoy of Hope event promises to be one of Charleston’s largest community outreach events to extend help to those in need in the city's history. Local churches, civic organizations, businesses, medical organizations are partnering together to serve our community. Join with us through volunteering and financial help and become a tangible expression of hope to your commun ity.

WHAT: COMMUNITY OUTREACH

A carnival-like event that includes free distribution of 1,000's of bags of food to provide meals to feed needy people throughout the Greater Charleston area. Free grocery distribution begins with free refreshments, live entertainment, children’s carnival area, medical services, job placement, haircuts, and more. The activities will continue, rain or shine, until all the food has been distributed. No identification is needed.

WHO:

Area churches, businesses, and community agencies in the Greater Charleston area; Without Walls Ministry; and Convoy of Hope, based in Springfield, Missouri, are donating time and resources to host this community outreach. This all-volunteer outreach includes a 1000+ volunteers who will be on hand to help unload the Convoy of Hope truck, distribute food, and facilitate all outreach programs.

WHY:

Convoy of Hope local outreaches are united acts of compassion designed to meet the basic physical and spiritual needs of community residents. Convoy of Hope is a non-profit organization that provides resources to organizations and churches to meet physical and spiritual needs for the purpose of making the community a better place.

WHEN: Saturday October 10th

WHERE: Noisette Parking Lot near the old Naval Base (map). At the corner of McMillan and Avenue East.

thanks Oeland - clearly you have been holding several of these clubs together for a while now. You have tirelessly encouraged and reached out and planned and prayed and discipled!! The need for more youth pastor commitment has been evident for a while, but with you ready to pass on the baton, perhaps someone will step up to the plate to continue these efforts. You and Terry have both been devoted for years now to maintaining a presence in this county's schools and I believe there is great value in that presence.

For the past year, as it became evident there was a lack on enthusiasm on keeping the clubs sponsored, I had hoped we could continue our group's meetings just to foster relationships and stay in each other's lives for prayer support. We have developed such great friendships over the years, and Joey and I have always enjoyed those meeting times! I do hope others will now begin to pray about taking on a new role to get involved on deeper level. We have a meeting scheduled for the second Tuesday in May at 2:30 at Starbucks. Perhaps this will give everyone some time to consider what each one is able to do?

Please shoot me emails back to let me know if you plan to attend so we have an idea of who will be there...there is a little money in the account if we want to get something together for a renewed club kick-off in the fall. So think about ideas for what ways the money can best be utilized. There is a little over a thousand=2 0dollars.

Not from my faith … or even this network. But I can’t support the clubs at schools anymore.

SHS has switched to FCA and it has potential. Especially considering how big sports are at SHS and the local FCA reps want to help. Gregg middle still attracts the largest numbers of kids, but no one to help the teachers and encourage them. And Sam has taken Rollings, but both he and I have our own children at the school and it immediately makes us “uncool” and tricky to guide the club. Will anyone step up and help?

Also, next year my wife gets even further in her nursing school and will begin more intense schedules. So, there is no guarantee that I will even be available in the morning.

Could you pray about helping next year … TODAY? The clubs need to be visited and contacted so they will know where they stand when the fall kicks off in August. And the SHS FCA should be electing leaders soon.

Christian High school grads

We at NNYM have been involved in a great resource for those concerned about Christian high school graduates keeping their faith, and I knew you would be one of those. This valuable opportunity is explained in a short video that Youth Transition Network is going to post on YouTube & GodTube (now called Tangle) this Thursday March 19th.

It will show you how you can help all the high school juniors & seniors you know to get motivated to prepare for their graduation transition, before they even graduate!. We are so excited about seeing the tide turn from Christian youth walking away from their faith after high school to growing in it, affecting the culture on their campus for Christ and becoming the next generation of church and ministry leaders.

Hey everyone,

Just to elaborate on what Terry said, ("Darien Gabriel and I are wanting to begin a group that would meet once a month for study, prayer - a learning group"), this group is more of a live discussion thread on being catalysts in our culture.

It's more discussion than prayer. We'd read a handful of articles built around the theme and then come together and discuss one or two of them. It would run monthly for 6 months. It's for those who love to learn in a group setting.

I'm thinking we'd meet at like Atlanta Bread, Chick fil a, or Starbucks where we could have a lively discussion about mission, ministry and how that might impact Summerville and beyond.

Hey guys - just a reminder that have our re-scheduled meeting this coming Tuesday at Starbucks at 2:30. We will need to discuss a location for our Winter Outreach event, so please come with some ideas! The electric guitar has been donated at cost, Joey is working on a speaker, Matt has the stages, and Ryan is working on getting a few bands. But the top of the parking garage didn't work out so we need a place! :)

Also, here is a note from Terry Feil:

1. The fort FP would like to have a guess speaker once a month. Could you see who would be interested in the group? they meet on Friday mornings at 6:50. They really want one for next Friday, the 21st.

2. Darien Gabriel and I are wanting to begin a group that would meet once a month for study, prayer - a learning group. We both went to Catalyst and have a book full of strategies, teachings, etc... we are looking at working through. Could you mention this and see if any of the guys would be interested? I'm thinking for men since this could become an accountable group.

Well, What a great night!

I thought that SYATP 2008 post rally was off the chains! I felt that we had a great response from the students in general based on ruff numbers we had between 350-375 in attendance. I know that I had several students rededicate but no SALVATIONS, not to say they didn't happen! I hope that all of you guys and your students had a great experience. I felt that the game was the best ever! They loved it and heard lots of great comments (even though sarah had a parent call about fish abuse before she could even leave SBC!) I thought that Ryan and his guys did a great job and Jon also did a great job! The whole Muffin Top and Muffin Bottom was most def - PG-13! I am so thankful that we have a network that is so willing to continue to do things like this! Darien asked about the pics and stuff and I know that Phillip has all the pictures on his computer and maybe he can get them all on the facebook. We should start some Summerville Student Ministry Group and add pics from all the events that we do together and promote and get the students to add it! Have a great weekend!

I also wanted to invite everyone to something - this is NOT a Riverbluff youth event that I'm promoting. This is a Leadership Event that we will be Hosting at Riverbluff.

It's called "LEAD LIKE JESUS." It's hosted by Ken Blanchard and Erwin McManus, plus it has many other leadership gurus speaking. We are a simulcast host church. It's Friday, October 19th. The cost is $25 and we will have snacks and drinks free on breaks. I want to invite you to come. I'm actually offering it to my student leadership team and paying their registration fee if they attend.

Video needs for SYATP

I am the slack intern that cannot make these meetings! I will be at the next one for like 30 min and then it is back to class for me. I am game for doing the video and here are the needs,

The past when I have done this, we have met somewhere for breakfast to gather pictures. I can do this, but I need to be back at CSU for class at 10. If you cannot bring it to breakfast you can drop it at the church by 1. (We need to decide on a good central meeting spot for breakfast).

As for camera requirements:

If you use a video camera, it must have DV output. If you want to bring it tuesday for approval I can tell you really quick.

Digital cameras, I need either your camera and USB cable. Or you can load them to a CD, please use the highest quality possible.

Thanks guys! How did the flyer look? I really want to get it over to Kinkos so we can get them in the schools!

Hello faithful disciples in the Summerville Youth Network!

This SYATP is going to be good. Are you excited? Are ya ready? Here are some thoughts I wanted to share before our meeting next week.

Band - I have firmed up our date with Soulstice for SYATP. They were just signed to a booking agent, so hopefully we are catching them on their way up! I am also talking to Phillip about beefing up the sound system for the big SBC gym.

Video – who will pull together our video? Phillip? Jason? I have some video edit stuff, but I am not be as talented as these guys – they rock!

Wii – who will buy this?

Winner – one idea I had was to give away something at the flagpoles, at each school, to a few kids (ticket, sticker, lanyard, whatever) and write down that kids info. Those kids with the “golden tickets” who bring them (or just show up) at the nighttime rally will then be brought on stage for a final game to win the Wii. This way, we are rewarding the faithful kids who actually came to pray in the morning. And all day long kids are talking about winning a prize and might be good word-of-mouth advertising. We need to “register” the kids, so losing the “ticket” won’t cost them the chance – or get them beat up!

Promo – are we all making our own posters, or one poster for every school? I am planning to order the cheap snap-on bands for SHS (it’s sad, I know). What are others giving out to promote?

Money – Amanda, could you help us calculate how much we owe?

FDHS – Each Monday after school starts is the student leadership meeting time. Terry will talk to the team about when they want to begin club meetings. Mr. Woods will continue as teacher sponsor.

Pinewood – Oeland will continue to YM coach at Pinewood this year. Laurie Herman is the teacher sponsor

Alston – Mike Royal will be working with Ms. Peterson, the teacher sponsor at Aston this year.

Sponsoring a Battle of the Bands for local youth groups could be a funding opportunity for monthly Pizza Bible Studies. Charlie Parmley from Ridge is willing to organize these – if you would be willing for your youth band to participate,(or any of your kids who are in a band) please contact Charlie Parmley at 870-5065. The first one is scheduled for April 21 at Ridge BC from 7-10 pm.

Matt – a youth leader, Katie, and her husband have been given custody of the child whose father was the Dorchester County police officer who was killed 2 weeks ago.
Pray for him as he resists a transition that would move his youth home groups out of homes.
Pray for Matt and Molly as they seek God’s will in growing their family.
Mike – pray for his youth workers…they are going through a lot and need encouragement
Rich – he has a need for youth workers who are passionate and have a sense of commitment
Pray for him as he organizes a camp for his students this summer
Cody – he needs youth workers and pray for him as he makes decisions regarding activities for his youth to be involved at church in this summer
Terry – His middle school worship leader was just sent to Afghanistan.
Pray for one of his graduates who was in a bad car accident
Phillip – He has a presentation in Myrtle Beach coming up in which he is coming from a Biblical world view. Pray that the right seeds would be planted as a result of his work.
Pray for him as prepares to propose to his girlfriend and talk to her parents soon.
Sarah – pray for her church. There are issues with her preaching the Word as her priest does not stand on the Word as absolute truth. Pray for her to be bold and stay strong as they face the possibility of a church spilt over this and many other issues.
Kari – pray for her as she leaves for Haiti on Thursday and returns the following Saturday.

4. Another possibility for PBS funding is having New Vision come out for one. They will bring a speaker and set up a CSU booth – Phillip and Jeremy are going to look into this as an outreach project for CSU to participate in. ** If you are interested in having NewVision lead a service for your youth or at your church, e mail Phillip Wilson…his information is on the contact list attached.

5. We need to go ahead and nail down funding through the end of this year. If you already know there is an amount you are able to contribute at any point from now until December, please respond to this e mail with an amount and an approximate date so we can budget accordingly. If not, please
consider it this month and we will get that information at our meeting in February.\n

6. Thank you to Darien Gabriel for beginning work on a Summerville Youth Network website! This site will explain who we are and what we do in the community. It will be a great resource to youth ministers who are new to the area and may be looking for a connection to other churches. We will also be linked to the National Association of Youth Workers and will start receiving their magazines, which I will have monthly for everyone. Thanks Darien! J\n

7. I will be contacting Steve Rohrlack from the SCB Convention to see if they are willing to donate funds for one PBS. They have done this in the past, so I will check into that today. If your denomination has outreach funding available for projects like this, I would be happy to write up some information for you to give to them. Let me know if a description of what it is would help you with that.
